Overview

This luggage-transfer focused itinerary is a 6-day hut-to-hut hike in Switzerland that feels authentically Swiss. The route takes you across the Appenzell region, offering an authentic Swiss Alpine experience. This itinerary is great for travellers looking for Alpine adventures at a high level of comfort, with most huts offering private rooms. Most of the huts do not allow us to book and pay for dinner in advance, but they do have full restaurants that serve dinner à la carte, so you can simply choose what you feel like each evening. You enjoy regional specialities such as world-class cheese and mountain-aged whiskey, including a visit to the cliffside Aescher Hut, best experienced in the quieter morning and evening hours. This itinerary is built around maximising luggage transfer, so on most days you hike only with a light daypack – easier on your knees and more relaxing at the huts – with just one night when luggage cannot be delivered. Both this itinerary and our 6-day Relaxed version avoid challenging terrain; if luggage transfer is not your main priority, the Relaxed option offers a slightly better distribution of days. **Private rooms are in high demand at mountain huts and they do book out quickly. When there is no availability for a private room, you may end up in the dormitory. Should this happen, we will adjust pricing accordingly. We can book the best itineraries for customers who provide us a flexible date range to work with.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation

Accommodation on the Hut to Hut in Switzerland tour is in charming mountain huts. These huts are quite diverse, and some are very simple and rustic, while others are quite fancy considering their remote location.

Every mountain hut and hotel is a little different, so you'll find a variety of room setups along a hut-to-hut tour. Shared dormitory-style rooms are common, and may include classic bunk beds (typically 4+ beds per room) or 'Matratzenlager' - large, shared sleeping platforms with individual mattresses. Some accommodations also offer private rooms. A private room for two can vary in design from place to place and may include bunk beds, two twin beds, a double bed constructed from two single mattresses with separate duvets, or a standard double bed. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to guarantee a specific room configuration.

On some itineraries, it is possible to do the entire route in private rooms.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner will always be available at, or near, your accommodation. It is not necessary to carry your own food for these meals. Only a few huts on this route allow us to book half-pension for our customers, which includes a multi-course set menu for dinner (usually with a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option) and breakfast. Drinks are never included. At the huts where dinner is not included, the hut operates a full restaurant with an a la carte menu that you can order off of.

For lunches, there are three options. We recommend planning a combination of these:

There are so many huts along the way, that on some days, you’ll have options to sit down for a warm lunch. While this sounds appealing, it is also very expensive and time-consuming. This is not a great option on long hiking days or for slower hikers who are already concerned about covering the planned route.

Most huts offer sack lunches that you can bring with you on the trail. We find these to be overpriced and repetitive to breakfast, and this option generates a lot of trash. Most huts do not include picnic lunches in their reservation process, which is why we are unable to book these in advance for you. Sack lunches should be requested immediately upon arrival at the hut for the next day. Huts are generally not very flexible in honoring dietary restrictions with their sack lunches.

The third option, and our favorite option, is to bring your own food. There are no grocery stores along the way, so you’ll want to carry everything with you onto the trail.

Season and Timing

The Hut to Hut in Switzerland Light trek has the longest season of all of our Alps hut hiking tours from the beginning of June to mi-October.
